You're looking for a five-letter word - maybe for a puzzle, a game, or a writing project. You have some letters pinned down, others you're unsure about, and a few you know are wrong. This tool gives you a straightforward list of every five-letter word that fits your pattern. No frills, no scoring, just a filterable word bank you can search through or export.

Lock letters into specific positions

If you know the second letter is "A" and the fourth is "R," put them in the corresponding position boxes. The tool will only return words with those letters in those exact spots. You can fill in as many or as few positions as you like. Leave a box blank if you're not sure about that position.

Use starts-with and ends-with for quick narrowing

Don't want to click through five boxes? Use the "starts with" and "ends with" fields instead. Type a letter or two into "starts with" to see only words beginning with that sequence. Same for "ends with." These fields work alongside the position boxes, so you can combine them for extra precision.

Filter by letters that must (or must not) appear

The "contains" field is for letters you know are in the word somewhere. The "excludes" field is for letters you've ruled out. You can enter multiple letters in each field - the tool will include all of the contains letters and exclude any word that has an excludes letter. This is the fastest way to narrow down when you have a mix of known and dead letters.

Export your list for offline use

Once your results are ready, click the copy button to copy the visible list. Paste it into a document, a note app, or directly into your game. The list is plain text, one word per line, no extra formatting. You can also scan grouped results if you prefer.

Dealing with large result sets

If your filters are too loose, you might get hundreds of matches. Add more constraints: include a rare letter like "Z" or "Q," or exclude common letters like "E" or "S." You can also use the starts-with and ends-with fields to cut the list down to a manageable size.

Wordle-style example

After a guess like CRANE, enter confirmed green letters in the pattern, put yellow letters in contains, and put gray letters in exclude. Do not judge the list until all three signals are entered.

Choose the right word tool

Use this page when your clue information comes from previous guesses: green letters, yellow letters, and excluded gray letters. If you only have loose letters with no positions, an unscrambler or word finder is a better fit.

Common Questions

What 5 letter words can I make with these letters?

Enter your known letters in the "contains" field. If you know any positions, fill in the position boxes. The tool will return all five-letter words that match.

What 5 letter words start with this letter?

Use the "starts with" field or put the letter in position box 1. The tool will only show words beginning with that letter.

What 5 letter words end with this letter?

Use the "ends with" field or put the letter in position box 5. The tool will only show words ending with that letter.

Can I exclude letters from the results?

Yes. Type the letters you want to exclude into the "excludes" field. Any word containing those letters will be removed from the results.

How do I find five-letter words for Wordle?

Enter your green letters in the position boxes, your yellow letters in the contains field, and your gray letters in the excludes field. The tool will return all matching five-letter words.

Before your next guess

Before you use a candidate as your next guess, compare it against every clue from previous guesses. A word that fits the length can still be wrong if it reuses a gray letter or puts a yellow letter back in the same position.
